Total Points: 47 Attendance: All 8 classes attended  *I included this weeks reading of "Anansi Boys" in the Total Points

Anansi Boys (6 points)

Every great piece of writing and art in the fantasy, sci-fi, and horror genres is about deeper human issues. Stories of these genres can be interesting without being about real world issues but the most profound ones’ deal with real life issues. The book takes the reader on an adventure that includes mythical creatures and gods but it is truly about a person’s life journey.                 At the start of the book, Fat Charlie is with Rosie. They are planning on getting married soon. This book allows him to realize that the two of them are not meant to be together. The book uses some storylines that have been used before but it includes them in an interesting way. I think the names of the characters are very interesting. The protagonist is called Fat Charlie. His brother is called Spider. Other characters in the book have a range of unique names. The only two characters with simple names are Rosie and Daisy. Their names sound similar and are both types of flowers.

The Magicians (6 points)

Since around the time "The Magicians" TV series came out, I had heard of it. I always saw the series advertised with adult characters. At the start of the book, I was a bit confused because the characters were in their late teen years. I'm assuming the TV show is about the characters later on in the book. I have not seen the series though so I don’t really know.                  The book in some ways feels like it isn't very original because I have seen stories of wizard schools in various books and films. However, the book is a little different in showing one character’s story over the course of many years. At the beginning of the book, Quentin is not yet attending college. He tries to go to Princeton but he is then lead to Brakebills College. One major difference between this book and other wizard school stories is that it takes place at a college. Many wizarding schools in films and books are for younger children and teens as they are just di

The Hobbit (6 points)

I have always known that “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” were originally books but I have only seen the films. “The Hobbit” films are a trilogy whereas the book tells the entire story in one book. In the book it is clear where the stopping points are in between movies. The book feels like there are several quests until the final quest is completed.                 “The Hobbit” is very different from the books we read in the previous weeks. It doesn’t include any horror elements. It is mostly an adventure and fantasy book. It is not as long as I would expect since it was made into three long films. A lot of what is in the book is included in the films.                 In this book, Bilbo goes through a literal and figurative journey. His literal journey is to find a stone. He comes across goblins, dragons, wolves, spiders and various other creatures on the way. His inner journey is trying to be accepted and accept himself. The dwarfs and humans in th

Akata Witch (5 Points)

Usually characters in books and films are given their name for a reason. Sunny is such a specific name that it wouldn’t make sense for it to be random. The name Sunny tells the reader that this character will be a light in a world filled with darkness. Her name also tells us that she will be a hero and a role model.               Sunny is an outsider and her situation is very unique to her. She has moved to Nigeria filled with people of a different skin color. She is albino, making her visibly different than everyone else. Since she is albino, she is called a witch. This is somewhat ironic because she ends up finding out later in the book that she actually is a witch. The theme explored in this book is similar to many stories told before it but the circumstances presented are unlike any other story I’ve seen or read. Online I have read many articles stating that Akata Witch is the Nigerian version of Harry Potter . Although I think Harry Potter is an excellent se
